Case Study:
Ergonomic Hammer Handle
Eagle Mold awarded in the Single Part Category of the 28th annual Conference and Design Competition of the SPI Structural Plastics Division.. March, 2000
The handle product design called for two different color rubbers molded over a plastic skeleton, which was then assembled onto the steel hammer shaft. Also the handle would be asymmetrical, so there would be right and left hand versions. Eagle Mold designed and built all the mold tooling for this project.
Eagle Mold in cooperation with Goshen Rubber’s Palmer Plant had to design the skeleton that would seal in the two overmold tools and also provide a flow path for the overmolded rubber. Another problem was how the robots could hold and position the skeleton in the overmolds. Eagle Mold designed and built a core type fixture that fit inside the skeleton and would stay in place though both overmolding processes, then be removed and reused. The finished handles are shipped to Emerson for assembly to the steel head and shaft.
The final result was a success and has won numerous awards for design and manufacturing:
